Then the crankshaft sensor being bad is another possibility. So dont just throw parts at it. Try to investigate the various parts of the fuel and electrical systems and see if you can pin it down. Rainey answered 4 years ago. GuruL16T answered 3 years ago.

No Start Toyota RAV4 4

GuruDRM5R answered 3 years ago. Had my RAV4 for about 6 weeks. At first was ok starting but then would not start 1st time. Sometimes would take 3 goes and once took 5 goes before it started. It's a push button to start so followed the instructions, foot on the brake and press the button. I will say though I only had this problem when I first started the car in the morning.

Timing Chain? Cranks but won't start

I changed a couple of things to start it. I used to lock the car with the fob, now I have gone back to pressing the door handle. I also start the car before I put my seat belt on.

Last of all I hold the key fob as near to the start button as possible to ensure a good connection. I have absolutely no idea if any of these things are responsible for starting the car but it has started 1st time every morning since I changed my routine.

The cranking does not sound normal though. There is no mechanical sound, like scraping, rattling, or banging, but it sounds like the "breathing " is off and the cranking sound is a bit different. I have had a timing chain go before on another vehicle, and I think it sounds similar, as far as the cranking.

Regarding possible engine damage, I've read it is an interference engine some places, and not on others. Is it? If so, does it trash the engine. What else might it be? Anything else to check? If it is timing chain, about how much does it cost to replace at a shop Anaheim, CA area if it matters?

Regarding doing it myself, I have done timing chains before, but in looking at the instructions, the RAV4 looks like more work, involving removing oil pan, dropping exhaust, etc.

Any shortcuts you know of, or is it as described in the manuals? Thanks Do you. Forgot to add, does it set an error code I can check for? Was this answer. Have you checked the compression and for spark yet?

Which engine do you have? You could check for codes I would. I checked it.

No error codes. Engine is 1AZ-FE I don't know the cylinder order, but looking in from the radiator, left to right, the compression measures are 50 psi, 35 psi, 45 psi, and 70 psi. I also have my questions from original post too. Thanks Was this answer. From your compression readings looks like your timing belt jumped. What size engine do you have and what is your zip codes so I can answer your other questions. Engine is 2. You have a timing chain on that engine I don't have the info for a price to replace it for that vechile.

I will do some asking to see what I can come up with. Sounds like the chain jumped I don't see any warning of a interference fit when replacing the chain. Most engines are interference fit though. If no lights coming on in the dashboard and no other electrical consumers work, the battery could be completely dead or there is no connection between the battery and the vehicle electrical system.

Check if the battery terminals look tight. If the battery is completely dead, jump starting might help. In this case, try turning the steering wheel left and right while gently jiggling the ignition key โ€” this might help to release the steering lock. Check the battery and the terminal cable connections. If they look really corroded, you need to clean the battery posts and cable connectors or replace the cables and try to start the engine. Also check the starter. The solenoid attached to the top of the starter can fail, as well as the components inside.

Replace starter solenoid, starter contacts, starter assembly or repair starter circuit as required. Very often this could be caused by a low battery or poor connection between the battery and starter. There are many possible causes, but we know it is neither a battery nor a starter problem. Just remember: a vehicle will always require air, fuel, and the ignition to operate.

Check the fuel. If the wrong amount of fuel is being injected into the combustion chamber, or being injected at the wrong time, the engine will not start. Again, this will be a case where the engine cranks over, but will not actually run. This could be caused by a few different parts including the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors, and fuel lines.

Some of those options are a stretch, but do have an effect on the system. Start with the fuel injectors, and make sure they are clean. Check the spark. Without spark to ignite the fuel mix in the combustion chamber, the engine will not start.

Spark issues are not limited to the plugs. Check the spark plug wires, the distributor or module, and plug gap. These all have a huge effect on the function of the ignition system.
